Can I do sport during my period?

What’s the point of sport?

Sport is very important for your physical, mental and intellectual well-being.

Sport is the best way to stay fit and live longer. Sport also contributes to your general well-being, reducing stress, anxiety and the risk of depression.

Thanks to sport, your attention span and ability to concentrate will improve, which in turn will improve your performance at school and your ability to learn.

Who is sport for?

Sport is for everyone: men and women of all ages.

Sporting activities help to develop values and skills that help girls and boys to fulfill their potential and respect each other.

Sport also strengthens women’s ability to assert their rights.

Can I do sport during my period?

You may be asking yourself this question. Some girls have pain during their menstruation. You may be afraid that the pain will be made worse by sporting activity, or you may be afraid of leaks.

Sport can be your ally during your period. Women can do sport when they are menstruating or pregnant. It’s even beneficial for them.

Studies have shown that after 30 minutes of physical activity, the body produces beta-endorphin, a “happy hormone”. This body product promotes well-being and reduces pain, including the mild pain you may feel during your period.

If you experience severe pain during your period, rest and avoid intense sport. The highest priority is to listen to your body. You can practice a gentle sport such as yoga or walking.

How do I manage my period during a sporting activity?

Menstrual flow is highest during sporting activities, because of the movement involved. It’s important to use suitable protection to prevent any leakage. WeerWi recommends that you try out various types of protection (disposable or reusable sanitary towels, tampons, menstrual panties or menstrual cups) to find out which one you’re most comfortable with. You’ll find several in the Weerwi shop on your app.

Try to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes, and avoid clothes that are tight around your tummy.

Don’t forget to drink more, take frequent breaks, and above all listen to your body by not pushing it too much.
